Joel Tsevat, M.D., M.P.H., is a general internist, professor of medicine, and Joaquin G. Cigarroa, Jr., M.D., distinguished chair in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is director of the Center for Research to Advance Community Health, a community-engaged research, health services research, population health, telementoring, and dissemination and implementation science center. Dr. Tsevat is also the director of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s Clinical and Translational Science (CTSA) Award KL2 program and a professor in the Departments of Population Health and Internal Medicine at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. In addition, he holds secondary appointments at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, The University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health – San Antonio regional campus, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Tsevat is a past president of the international Society for Medical Decision Making. He is also a long-standing member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians. He served on the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences CTSA Steering Committee, where he co-led the Collaboration and Engagement Enterprise Committee, which focuses on community engagement, health disparities, dissemination and implementation, and team science. Dr. Tsevat currently serves on the Health Equity, Patient-Reported Outcomes, and Community Engagement Committee for the National Institutes of Health’s Researching COVID to Enhance (RECOVER) study.
Dr. Tsevat’s research interests include patient-reported outcomes, particularly health status and utility assessment, decision modeling, cost-effectiveness analysis, shared decision making, and health communication. He has served as principal investigator on multiple federally funded grants from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), including a current AHRQ grant, “Incorporating Patient-Reported Outcomes Into Shared Decision Making With Patients With Osteoarthritis of the Knee.” He has been a principal investigator on CTSA grants at the University of Cincinnati from 2009 to 2017 and at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio since 2017.
Dr. Tsevat received a B.A. in Plan II from The University of Texas at Austin. He earned his M.D. from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and M.P.H. from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Emory University-affiliated hospitals and a fellowship in clinical decision making and medical information sciences at Tufts Medical Center. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Tsevat joined the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force in January 2023.
