This topic page summarizes the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendations on screening for lipid disorders in adults.


Current Recommendation

Release Date: June 2008

Men

  • The USPSTF strongly recommends screening men age 35 years and older for lipid disorders.  
    Grade: A Recommendation.
  • The USPSTF recommends screening men age 20 to 35 years for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease.
    Grade: B Recommendation.

Women at Increased Risk

  • The USPSTF strongly recommends screening women age 45 years and older for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease.  
    Grade: A Recommendation.
  • The USPSTF recommends screening women age 20 to 45 years for lipid disorders if they are at increased risk for coronary heart disease.
    Grade: B Recommendation.

Screening Young Men and All Women Not at Increased Risk

  • The USPSTF makes no recommendation for or against routine screening for lipid disorders in men ages 20 to 35 years or women age 20 years and older who are not at increased risk for coronary heart disease.
    Grade: C Recommendation.

In an effort to make the USPSTF recommendations clearer and its processes more transparent, the Task Force is sharing drafts of its draft Research Plans, Evidence Reports, and Recommendation Statements for public comment. As a result, the final Recommendation Statement is not yet available.

Research Plan

USPSTF members work with researchers from an independent Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC) to create a Research Plan that guides the systematic review of the evidence. The Research Plan consists of an analytic framework, key questions, and a literature search strategy or research approach.
